Dr. Anne - Tom, I am so pleased and excited to have completed our newest project, Affirmations for Healing Body, Mind and Spirit. Why don't you tell the readers what you told me last summer?
Tom Carey - Hi, Dr. Spencer. Well, I had written some new royalty-free music that I felt would go very well with a two part "Affirmations for Healing Body, Mind and Spirit". Each section of the CD has a track number, so you can listen to the part appropriate to your needs at the moment. The first part uses music called Journey on the Astral Sea, a relaxing meditative "sound-scape". The affirmations are separated into three parts - Body, Mind and Spirit. The second part with the same affirmations set to music called Electric Dance, is also divided into three parts with track numbers, and is highly motivational and upbeat with an almost techno sound.
Dr. Anne - Tell me more about the Royalty-Free Music Series.
Tom Carey - There is a lot of royalty-free music available, but none that is suitable for Hypnotherapists. So I set out to create some.
Dr. Anne - How many CDs are in the series?
Tom Carey - The first series has four CDs with a lot of variation, yet all are tranquil and hypnotic. The second series has three CDs with a more modern, techno sound - easy to listen to, upbeat, tranquil and danceable. This new addition to the Royalty-Free Music Series gives Hypnotherapists an even wider variety of tools to assist their clients and create more effective programs.
Dr. Anne - So we have taken one song from the first series and one song from the second and created our new project, "Affirmations for Healing Body, Mind and Spirit".
Tom Carey - That is correct, Dr. Spencer. The goal was to create a program that people could listen to any time. It's difficult to listen to most affirmation tapes or CDs while driving in your car or doing a workout routine. They tend to be a bit dry and "tranquilizing." However, that's what you need before going to bed, first thing in the morning, etc. So that is what we created with the first part of Affirmations for Healing Body, Mind and Spirit. The second part is upbeat and energizing and great to listen to while driving, working out - anything - any time. I am very pleased and excited at the scope of this project - something for everyone. And I am very proud to have someone of your caliber put the affirmations to my music.
Dr. Anne - Thank you very much. Now let's talk a little bit about the process of putting "Affirmations for Healing Body, Mind and Spirit" together. When we first started talking about this project, you asked me to bring two copies of my script to the studio, a photograph of myself, a short biography, a description of the program we were going to create, my business contact information and a catchy title. Explain the process of taking my script idea and turning it into a retail-ready program.
Tom Carey - You came to the studio prepared - you had rehearsed your script. You had two copies of your script and we recorded your voice-over for Affirmations for Healing Body, Mind and Spirit, which included re-recording any words that came out unclear or unsteady.
Dr. Anne - Yes, it is wonderful not to have to say everything perfectly in one take. You do a marvelous job of editing and helping my scene flow seamlessly. What is next?
Tom Carey - Once we have the voice-over, we add the music, adjusting the volume to match the words. Then we make a reference CD - the first CD which goes home with you and you listen to it to see if anything was missed during the recording session.
Dr. Anne - So if I decide to change something or add something, I can come back into the studio and you edit it to reflect the changes I desire.
Tom Carey - Correct. Once everything is the way you want it, we make our duplication master. Then our focus shifts to packaging.
Dr. Anne - What is the difference between packaging for retail as opposed to in-office sales?
Tom Carey - Packaging isn't so important when you are selling directly to clients, because they already know you. They are buying you and your services.
Dr. Anne - So why am I spending money on packaging?
Tom Carey - Because we are packaging for retail. At this point, to be picked up by wholesale distributors, some things have to be taken care of with the packaging.
Dr. Anne - Such as?
Tom Carey - Not only does the package need to be eye-catching and have appeal - it also needs the ISBN and bar codes for stores to carry your product, and it is shrink-wrapped.
Dr. Anne - So how do we go about creating the inserts and tray card?
Tom Carey - We use the information you supplied - your bio, etc. Typically, the front cover of the CD will have an eye-catching photo, image or graphic, the title of the program, and the author's name. On the inside of the front cover we like to put a picture of the author, bio and additional contact information. On the back of the tray card is a description to help encourage sales, contents of the CD, and a machine readable bar code and legal information.
Dr. Anne - Do you have the images and graphics or do I bring the art?
Tom Carey - Yes and yes. We can use a photograph, or a picture you or a friend have drawn, or we can supply them for you.
Dr. Anne - You do all the printing of the inserts and shrink wrapping in the studio. Would you please explain about the bar codes and ISBN.
Tom Carey - Sure. You can either obtain your own ISBN or Mach 1 Audio can assign your program one of theirs.
Dr. Anne - What is an ISBN and why not use UPC numbers?
Tom Carey - ISBN is the International Standard Book Number. This is a spoken word program and it is better to have a book code. With a UPC number, it would end up in the music section, and people might not find it.
Dr. Anne - Do I have to have a bar code on my package?
Tom Carey - No, however most stores will not put your product on the shelf without one.
Dr. Anne - Ok - so I brought all the requested items to your studio, we put our spoken word and music together, made the master CD, created a visually appealing package and prepared it for sale in stores. Is there anything else that you would like people to know?
Tom Carey - The greatest script and packaging in the world does not sell CDs. Potential customers need to see your CDs. You need to get your CDs picked up by wholesale distributors, retail stores and on the World Wide Web.
Dr. Anne - How do we do this?
Tom Carey - First, every new product produced by Mach 1 Audio is eligible to receive a web page and sales support on mach1audio.com. Then it is your job to inform people that it is there. The wider range of people you reach the greater chance you have to sell your product. We can also supply you with a list of wholesale distributors who are 'spoken word audio friendly'. We encourage you to ask us many questions about marketing your product - before you do things - so you can benefit from our experience. Dr. Anne - So you want the therapist to stay in contact with you through the process of recording, mastering, and distribution and web sales support. Communication is always a factor in success.
